Add a Case Fan to the Interior of the Computer Tower 1 Connect a case fan to an open space on the rear-inside panel of the computer case. Some computer towers will provide extra space on the rear panel of the case designed specifically to accommodate additional case fans. Attach the case fan to the vented, rear panel. Power down the computer and turn the power switch off on the power supply, which is typically situated on the back of the computer tower near the AC power cord. Position the fan over the vented area. Line the screw holes in the fan up with the venting holes on the back of the case. Using a screwdriver, insert at least 4 screws into the corresponding holes in each corner of the case fan. The low speed wire contacted the battery post and the fan spun up quickly.

Fan Types A 2-wire fan has power and ground terminals. A 4-wire fan has power, ground, a tach output, and a PWM-drive input. PWM, in brief, uses the relative width of pulses in a train of on-off pulses to adjust the level of power applied to the motor. A 2-wire fan is controlled by adjusting either the dc voltage or pulse width in low-frequency PWM. However, with only two wires, a tach signal is not readily available.

Most likely, you will end up with a 12 volt dc fan, and will want to use a less involved method to make it compatible with ac. The fan voltage, etc. If a 12 volt dc fan, go to a thrift store and buy a 12 volt cell phone charger. If you get a 6 volt fan, buy a 6 volt charger, etc. Cut off the very end of the phone charger wire that ends in a square connector rather than a typical wall plug.
Then, use a wire splicer to remove the outer black coating. You should see one small red and one small black wire inside. Remove enough of the red and black coating that about an inch of metal is exposed for both wires. It should have at least one red and one black wire. Some differ, but generally, any green, yellow, or blue wires are sensors or for speed control and can be ignored. Strip the red and black wires until about an inch of metal is exposed for both.

Aug 25, 3-pin fans – the fan is controlled by voltage. I think that means fan speed is adjusted by some physical means, such as a knob to turn. It’s not possible to adjust the fan speed through the motherboard i. Speedfan, bios, other software won’t have any affect on the speed fan. True most of the time. Server boards in particular, Abit boards had they are in process of being out of business excellent fan speed control through the bios.
Also in the bios of some boards for the CPU fan – there is a “Legacy” fan speed control setting that will adjust the CPU fan speed by voltage control in case you do not use a CPU heatsink with a pwm 4 pin fan. Say a 3rd party heatsink in which you supply your own fan and it is 3 pin. Motherboard header is 4 pin. These are useful for rear exhaust fans. Some work really well, and some are crap as they dont rev up until it is IMO too damn hot.
These dont work well for intake fans as the room air is usually always so cool, even in summer, the fans run at their lowest speed. Other thoughts, you can plug a 3 pin fan into a 4 pin motherboard header. You cannot plug a 4 pin pwm fan into a 3 pin fan header – will not run.
