This earns us “points” so that when relic season arrives again about first frost, we can drop everything and run to the field at every chance! That’s why I haven’t had any new finds to post here in a while. So, even though it’s off the topic, thought I would share my buddy Jack’s nice find from last year. They spent a week metal detecting large parcels of farm land, with the landowners permission and hospitality. Finds included roman era bronze coins, hundreds of european flat and military buttons, and sundry other items. But, the prize of the trip popped out of Jack’s portion of the field, when he excavated a B. First gold coin for him too, in almost 30 years of detecting! You might imagine his disappointment when he was NOT allowed to bring the gold home!
By Dave Dolbee published on May 20, in Ammunition If you know only two things about shotguns—they go bang! That, and I am sorry to say, you know what it feels like to be kicked by a mule, but that is a story for another day. Not only does a shotgun NOT have to recoil like sledgehammer—it should not. Modern shotgun technology has incorporated several independent systems to reduce recoil; springs, dampeners, gels and rubber components are regularly used, sometimes in conjunction, to reduce recoil.
Of course, the shotgun shell itself has a lot to do with felt recoil. At that measurement, drams of black powder weighed one pound.
Diet: Seeds form the major component of the diet, but it varies greatly according to species. Some ground feeding species (granivorous species) eat fruit and take insects and worms. One species, the Atoll Fruit Dove, has adapted to taking insects and small reptiles.
It illustrates that you can purchase shotgun shells of different gauges with various size pellets. The shot pellet sizes are not mixed in the shell, but remain uniform. The larger the shot pellet size, the more of them are packed into the casing. You want the larger pellets for these birds because you need the extra density to penetrate thick feathers and bones in order strike vital organs for a clean, ethical kill.
However, a growing body of environmental legislation is forcing hunters to move away from lead for waterfowl to non-toxic steel and alloys which can have different ballistic properties. To calculate the approximate number of shot pellets in your shotgun shell, see the shot charge load on the box. Slugs Some shotgun shells are loaded with lead slugs instead of shot pellets. A slug is a bullet-like projectile but often rounded at the tip rather than pointed.

The common characteristics that make a shotgun unique center around the requirements of firing shot. These features are the features typical of a shotgun shell , namely a relatively short, wide cartridge, with straight walls, and operating at a relatively low pressure. Ammunition for shotguns is referred to in the USA as shotgun shells, shotshells, or just shells when it is not likely to be confused with artillery shells.
The term cartridges is standard usage in the United Kingdom. The shot is usually fired from a smoothbore barrel; another configuration is the rifled slug barrel , which fires more accurate solitary projectiles. The spreading of the shot allows the user to point the shotgun close to the target, rather than having to aim precisely as in the case of a single projectile.

Pretty mundane by this page’s standards. A character picks up a gun, bow, crossbow, throwing-knife, shuriken, or other ranged weapon, and gains Improbable Aiming Skills. This enables such feats as Blasting It Out of Their Hands , creating a Pinball Projectile , knowing how to Lead the Target from kilometers away, or the Offhand Backshot the firearm-based answer to the Offhand Backhand , and is in no way dependent on the factual accuracy of the weapons in question.
A frequent user of this trope is The Western , where the heroes are often using guns that were, in real life, notoriously inaccurate at anything other than point-blank range, for feats that would make a modern-day sniper with a top-tuned high-tech rifle turn green with envy. It can also be done by an Archer Archetype , who might emulate Robin Hood by splitting an arrow down the middle.
May 06, · Buck-n-ball is one. Some skeet shooters use reclaimed shot (shot dug up at gun ranges and bagged — it tends to be less than round, and several shot sizes mixed randomly) to produce more random cloud-like patterns (can’t say how well this works).
By learning the varieties, styles, and conventions of ammunition available, you can select the right shot for the job at hand. Read on for a primer on shotgun shells, slugs, and chokes. Steps Learning the Basics 1 Distinguish between the two basic styles of shotgun shell. From a shotgun, you can either fire “shot” or “slugs. Slugs are essentially a single, fairly large metal bullet loaded in a plastic cartridge.
The kind of shot used in shot shells also varies and it is important to understand the way shot is sized. Birdshot contains smaller pellets for use on smaller animals or targets, while buckshot rounds are filled with larger pellets for use on larger animals or targets. Slugs are available in rifled varieties, for use in smooth-bore barrels, and “sabot” varieties, for use in rifled barrels.
Shotguns come in many different gauges, and the ammunition will correspond to that gauge. You must use 12 gauge ammunition for a 12 gauge shotgun, 20 gauge for a 20 gauge, etc.
If you are from the South, it is likely that you are familiar with persimmons. Persimmons are a fascinating fruit that grows wild throughout much of the South. When completely ripe, the pulp is sweet and delicious, but when not ripe, it will turn your mouth inside out!!! Pictured here are the steps involved from harvesting the ripe persimmons, to “pulping” them, and eventually turning them into delicious “persimmons balls” or pudding.
I’m really unsure if this is just peculiar to the South or if persimmons also grow in the wild in the more northern states. I can tell you the finished product is delicious!!!

The higher the velocity you accelerate that lead to, the more the recoil. The more weight you remove from the weapon, the more the recoil. Taken the other way, if you lessen the lead payload, you cut recoil. Drop the muzzle velocity, you cut recoil. Add weight to the gun, you drop recoil.
